The short answer

Official travel advice reviewed 23 October 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border and against all but essential travel to the rest of Saudi Arabia. Its 21 October update says King Khalid International Airport was struck on 10 October and continues to be targeted. The earlier Medina airport exception is no longer in the current advice. Read the UK advice.

The US State Department remains at Level 3: Reconsider travel, with a Do Not Travel warning for the Yemen border. Its advisory issued 12 October says US government employees working in Saudi Arabia need special authorization to use any airport in the country, not only Riyadh, and advises US citizens to take similar precautions. Read the US advisory.

Australia and New Zealand now say Do not travel to Saudi Arabia. Canada and Ireland say Avoid non-essential travel. These are different governments' assessments, not interchangeable labels. Confirm your own government's advice, transit route and insurance exclusions before paying for any trip.

What has happened in 2026

The UK FCDO reports missile and drone attacks on cities, airports, military and energy infrastructure and shipping, with further airport attacks and disruption very likely. Its latest notice says King Khalid airport continues to be targeted. The US advisory also describes risks from armed conflict and falling debris and warns against photographing or sharing images of interceptions or impact sites. Read the original notices rather than treating an itinerary or terminal guide as an operating-status check.

If you still go: how to protect your trip

  1. Check your insurance in writing

The FCDO warns that your insurance could be invalidated if you travel against its advice, and most policies have a similar clause for your own government’s advice. Ask your insurer before you book. Read travel insurance for Saudi Arabia.

  2. Book flexible

Choose refundable hotels and changeable flights. Airspace can close at short notice and flights have been disrupted.

  3. Register with your government

For example STEP (US), SafeTravel (New Zealand) or FCDO email alerts (UK), so you get updates and can be contacted.

  4. Know what to do in an alert

Saudi Civil Defence sends early warning alerts to people in affected areas. In an attack, the FCDO says to stay indoors under hard shelter, away from windows, and follow local authorities.

  5. Don’t film attacks or military sites

Filming or sharing images of military sites, activity or damage can lead to severe penalties, Canada warns. The FCDO asks travellers not to capture or share images of conflict-related incidents.

Everyday safety

  • Crime: the FCDO says the crime rate is low but petty crime exists, and there have been more serious crimes, including against women. Take care outside towns and cities.
  • Roads: the FCDO says driving standards are poor and serious accidents are common. Wear seatbelts, keep to major roads and cross the desert in daylight.
  • Floods: heavy rain from November to February can cause flash floods. Civil Defence is on 998.
  • Laws: the bigger risk for most visitors is breaking a law without knowing it. Read Saudi laws for tourists.

Questions travellers ask

Is it safe to travel to Saudi Arabia now?

Government warnings differ. As reviewed on 23 October 2026, Australia and New Zealand say Do not travel, the US says Reconsider travel, Canada and Ireland say Avoid non-essential travel, and the UK advises against all but essential travel to the rest of Saudi Arabia alongside a no-travel zone within 10 km of Yemen. Read your own government’s full advice before deciding.

Does the UK warning still exempt Medina airport?

No. The current FCDO advice reviewed on 23 October 2026 advises against all but essential travel to the rest of Saudi Arabia and against all travel within 10 km of Yemen. Do not rely on the earlier airport exception.

Is Riyadh airport safe to use?

The UK says King Khalid International Airport continues to be targeted. Canada advises against all travel to RUH, while US government employees need authorization to use any Saudi airport. Reconfirm operating status with your airline; a flight being on sale is not a safety assessment.

Is AlUla exempt from Saudi travel warnings?

No. A destination not being individually named does not override a country-wide warning. Check your complete itinerary, airports and policy exclusions.

Will travel insurance cover Saudi Arabia?

It depends on the policy, your government’s advice, itinerary and activities. Travel against official advice could invalidate cover. Obtain written confirmation before paying; do not assume visa medical insurance covers cancellation or evacuation.
