Rules of the road
- Licence: visitors can drive on many foreign licences for a limited period. Carry an International Driving Permit as well; rental desks and police may ask for it.
- Age: usually 21+, with young-driver fees under 25.
- Speed cameras: the Saher system is everywhere and fines go to the rental company, then to you.
- Fuel: cheap by European standards. Stations are frequent on highways but sparse on desert roads; fill up before leaving town.
- Animals: camels wander onto rural roads, especially at dusk. Slow down.
- Off-road: most rental contracts forbid off-road driving, even in a 4x4. Use a tour for dunes.

Picking up and returning the car
- Credit card in the driver’s name. Debit cards are frequently refused for the deposit.
- Photograph the car on all sides, plus the fuel gauge and odometer, before you leave the lot.
- Excess cover: standalone excess insurance bought before travel is usually much cheaper than the desk upgrade.
- Fines arrive late. Speed-camera fines can be charged to your card weeks after you return the car.
- One-way hires between cities are possible but carry a large fee. Flying Riyadh to AlUla and hiring locally is usually cheaper and faster than driving 1,000+ km.

Do I need a 4x4 in AlUla?
No. All main sights, resorts and Hegra’s visitor centre are on paved roads. An SUV is more comfortable, but a normal car is fine.
Is it safe to drive in Saudi Arabia?
Roads are excellent, but local driving can be fast and assertive in Riyadh and Jeddah. Outside cities it is calm. Avoid driving at night in the desert where camels are about.
Do I need an International Driving Permit in Saudi Arabia?
It is strongly recommended. Some rental companies and police checks ask for it alongside your licence. It is cheap and quick to get before you travel.
Can I pay tolls and parking easily?
There are few tolls. City parking is often via apps or meters that accept cards. Malls and hotels usually have free parking.
