AlUla planning

How many days do you need in AlUla?

Three full days is the sweet spot. Two covers the essentials; four makes room for Dadan, Jabal Ikmah and a slower desert day without turning the trip into a checklist.

Two days: the essentials

Day 1 - Hegra and Elephant Rock

Take a morning Hegra tour, leave a proper break in the afternoon, then reach Elephant Rock before sunset. Book Hegra before arranging the rest of the day because entry is by timed experience.

Day 2 - Dadan or Maraya, then Old Town

Choose Dadan and Jabal Ikmah if archaeology is the reason for the trip; choose the Maraya area if architecture and Ashar Valley matter more. Walk the Oasis and Old Town from late afternoon into dinner.

Three days: the best first trip

Day 1 - settle in slowly

Use arrival day for the Oasis Heritage Trail, AlJadidah and Old Town. These fit together geographically and work best in softer late-afternoon light.

Day 2 - Hegra properly

Make Hegra the fixed booking, then add Elephant Rock around sunset. Do not stack another timed heritage tour immediately after Hegra.

Day 3 - Dadan and Jabal Ikmah

Use the final morning for the Dadan and Jabal Ikmah experience. Keep the afternoon for Maraya, a viewpoint, the pool or a seasonal event.

When four days is worthwhile

  • You are flying long haul and do not want one delayed domestic flight to erase a third of the visit.
  • You want both archaeology and an active experience such as hiking, cycling or a seasonal balloon flight.
  • You are staying at a resort in Ashar Valley and want time to use it.
  • You are visiting during a festival, when a concert or event occupies one evening.

For four days, add one substantial extra rather than stretching every sight: use the AlUla trip planner to build the route around your month and transport.

The timing mistake to avoid

Do not describe an arrival afternoon and departure morning as two full days. ULH has a limited timetable and many hotels sit 30–45 minutes from the airport. Count nights and usable sightseeing windows, not calendar dates.
