Is the Premium 4x4 worth SAR 1,000 (≈ $267)?
The Premium Tour is priced per vehicle, so it gets cheaper per head the more of you there are. It is never cheaper than the coach, but for a full car the gap is small:

| Group size | Premium per person | Day Tour total | Extra for Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | SAR 1000 (≈ $267) | SAR 95 (≈ $25) | SAR 905 (≈ $241) |
| 2 | SAR 500 (≈ $133) | SAR 190 (≈ $51) | SAR 810 (≈ $216) |
| 3 | SAR 333 (≈ $89) | SAR 285 (≈ $76) | SAR 715 (≈ $191) |
| 4 | SAR 250 (≈ $67) | SAR 380 (≈ $101) | SAR 620 (≈ $165) |
| 5 | SAR 200 (≈ $53) | SAR 475 (≈ $127) | SAR 525 (≈ $140) |
| 6 | SAR 167 (≈ $45) | SAR 570 (≈ $152) | SAR 430 (≈ $115) |
| 7 | SAR 143 (≈ $38) | SAR 665 (≈ $177) | SAR 335 (≈ $89) |
Our verdict: for 1–2 people, the Day Tour is the obvious choice. For a family of 5–7, the Premium Tour costs SAR 335–525 (≈ $89–140) more in total and gets you your own vehicle, a ranger and a quieter, more flexible visit, which is worth it if the coach would mean managing children or slow walkers.
Which one for you?
- First visit, on a budget: the Day Tour. It covers the main sights, including the Tomb of Lihyan son of Kuza and the Diwan.
- Family or small group: the Premium Tour, ideally with 5 or more people.
- Second visit, or nature lovers: the Wildlife & Nature Tour goes into the reserve beyond the tombs, where gazelles, oryx and ibex live. Morning and afternoon tours run daily.
- Photographers: the horse carriage runs at sunrise and sunset, but check it is back before you plan around it.
Mistakes to avoid
- Going to Hegra for the Day Tour: it starts at the Winter Park bus stop in AlUla, while the other tours start at the Hegra Visitor Centre.
- Booking flights first. From December to February, check your date in the Hegra ticket planner and book tours as soon as your dates are fixed.
- Paying a reseller far more for the same coach tour. Compare with the official price first; see what to do if Hegra is sold out.
