Jeddah

Getting around Jeddah

Ride-hailing is the simplest option for most visitors. The city is spread along the coast, major sights are far apart, and Jeddah does not have a visitor-ready Metro network.

Jeddah transport at a glance

Best for most trips
Uber or Careem between neighbourhoods
Airport to city
Ride app, official taxi or pre-booked transfer
Airport to Makkah/Madinah
Haramain High Speed Railway from the airport station
Walking
Useful within Al-Balad or one Corniche section, not between districts
Car hire
Useful for day trips; unnecessary for a short city break
Rush hours
Allow a generous buffer in the morning and late afternoon/evening

Ride-hailing and taxis

Uber and Careem are usually the easiest door-to-door choice. Enter the exact entrance or landmark rather than only the district name: waterfront sites, malls and hotels can have several vehicle entrances. At JED, follow signs to the official pickup area shown in the app.

Official taxis are available at the airport and major hotels. Confirm that the meter is used or agree the fare before leaving.

The airport train

The Haramain High Speed Railway station at King Abdulaziz International Airport is useful for Makkah and Madinah, and for the railway’s Jeddah stations. It is not a general city Metro. Check the official timetable against your flight and allow time to reach the platform.

Mistakes that waste time

  • Planning Al-Balad and the far north Corniche as if they were adjacent.
  • Relying on an unverified bus route for a timed ticket.
  • Hiring a car solely for central Jeddah, then paying for parking and sitting in traffic.
  • Leaving no buffer for Friday prayer, event traffic or the evening rush.

Questions travellers ask

Does Jeddah have a Metro?

Jeddah does not currently have a visitor-ready urban Metro network. The Haramain train is an intercity railway, not a substitute for local transport.

Do you need a car in Jeddah?

Not for a short city visit. Ride apps are simpler. Hire a car if Jeddah is the start of a longer road trip or you have several out-of-city stops.

Can you walk around Jeddah?

You can walk within Al-Balad and selected waterfront areas, but the main visitor districts are too far apart to connect on foot.
