What to wear in Saudi Arabia
The rules are simpler than most people expect. Modest, comfortable clothes are all you need.

The short version
- Everyone: cover shoulders and knees in public. Avoid tight, sheer or slogan clothing.
- Women: visitors do not need to wear an abaya or cover their hair, except in mosques. Loose trousers or a long skirt with a top that covers the shoulders is ideal.
- Men: long trousers or knee-length shorts, and a shirt. No bare chests outside the pool.
- Resorts and beaches: swimwear is fine at hotel pools and private resort beaches, including the Red Sea resorts.
Etiquette that matters
- Ask before photographing people, especially women.
- Prayer times close some shops for 20–30 minutes several times a day.
- Public displays of affection are frowned upon.
- Alcohol is not served to visitors. Bringing it in is illegal.
- Use your right hand to eat, pass and receive things.

Do female tourists have to wear a hijab in Saudi Arabia?
No. Female visitors are not required to cover their hair, except when visiting a mosque.
Can I wear shorts in Saudi Arabia?
Knee-length shorts are fine for men in most places. Short shorts are not appropriate in public for anyone.
