Diving the Saudi Red Sea
Warm water, healthy coral and hardly any other boats. Here is how to get underwater on a first trip.

Your three options
Day boats from Jeddah. The easiest first taste: half-day trips to sandbank islands like Bayada with shallow reef snorkelling, and dive centres running certified-diver trips from the northern marinas.
Resort reefs. The Red Sea Global resorts have house reefs and their own dive centres — the most comfortable option, at resort prices.
Farasan Banks. The serious diving: offshore plateaus and walls in the far south, reached by liveaboard or expedition boats in season. Book well ahead.

Before you dive
- Certification: bring your card and logbook; most centres accept PADI and SSI.
- Insurance: check your policy covers scuba to your certified depth — many standard policies exclude it. EKTA includes dive cover options
- Visibility and seasons: best from September to May. Summer is hot but the water is bath-warm.
- Reef rules: no touching, no gloves, no feeding. The reefs’ condition is their selling point.

Before you book
- Certification: bring your card and logbook. Many operators want proof of recent dives for deeper or current-prone sites.
- Insurance: standard policies often exclude scuba. Buy cover to your certified depth, or add dive-specific insurance. Insurance guide →
- Flying after diving: follow the usual guidance of at least 12 hours after a single dive and 18 hours after multiple dives or days, longer after decompression dives. Plan your last dive day around your flight home.
- Sun and heat: surface intervals on open boats are hot. Bring a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and plenty of water.
Not a diver?
